I have a stupid Gimp problem. I'm working on a graphic and I closed the box that contains the info on the different layers, where I can see which layer I am working on, and I don't know how to make that box come back. I've tried closing and reopening Gimp, bumbling around in general, and clicking on all of the options under "View," but no joy. Can anyone help?

Try pressing Ctrl + L (if you're using a PC).

Or go to File -> Dialog -> Add new dock
There should be the option for layers.
